As part of the national Arbor week, Endumeni local Municipality’s speaker Cllr S.B Mdluli with municipal officials in collaborations with local schools in Sibongile Township took the initiative and went all out to celebrate Arbor Week by planting trees in Freedom Park. Arbor Week is deemed as a special week that has been set aside for the planting and caring of trees.
Arbor Day originated in Switzerland during the 15th century to raise awareness amongst people about the importance of trees. In South Africa, Arbor Day started in 1983 and in 1997 it was extended to a National Arbor Week. In South Africa, Arbor Week falls in the first week of September.
Endumeni Local Municipality speaker S.B Mdluli expressed how it is significant for every individual to cherish and take care of the environment and scrupulously explained to all learners that were present.
“This planting initiative is encouraging you to take a greater sense of ownership of your natural environment and therefore a marked decrease in littering, vandalism, dumping and by-law disobediences will be evident.”
National Arbor Week in South Africa is a time when South Africans of all ages are encouraged to celebrate the beauty and importance of trees.
